Hi! Our names are Tyler and Tyna and we have been swimming competitively since we were eight years old. We started taking “lessons” when we were just 18 months old, but really didn’t learn to swim until we were about 8. Our parents wanted to make sure that we felt comfortable and could be safe if we were around water. As we were taking lessons at the Montclair YMCA, one of the teachers recommended we go out for the swim team. We did and the rest is history. We have been swimming competitively for nearly ten years.
One of the things we noticed is that although we love the sport, there were very few swimmers of color. According to several studies, sixty to seventy percent of blacks do not know how to swim. We felt that we could do more to respond to this concern so we started WE SWIM to encourage participation in the sport, raise the awareness around the need and to raise critical funds to support swim lessons for those that can’t afford the lessons. Thanks in advance for your time and hopefully your support!
We want to encourage water safety and diversity in the sport of swimming.
